How often should I exfoliate?

Updated 1. January 2024

Immediate Answer: 2-3x weekly maximum. Over-exfoliation damages your skin barrier and causes sensitivity. Your skin naturally sheds every 28 days; you're supporting this process, not forcing it.

The Science: Exfoliation removes surface dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and allowing products to penetrate better. But over-exfoliation damages your living skin cells, disrupts your microbiome, and compromises your barrier.

Two exfoliation types:

  • Physical (scrubs, brushes, microdermabrasion) - mechanical removal. Higher risk of over-exfoliation.
  • Chemical (AHAs, BHAs, enzymes) - enzymatic or acid-based. More controlled, lower risk of damage.

How Nordic Formula Helps: In the Anti-Pigmentation Programme, we recommend gentle exfoliation 2x weekly to support dark spot fading. This is the upper limit—more frequently risks barrier damage.

With retinol-based products (anti-ageing), exfoliation is already happening through accelerated cell turnover—additional exfoliation may be unnecessary. The 8-week Anti-Ageing Cycling Programmeme accounts for this, with the cycling approach providing natural exfoliation through retinol without the need for separate exfoliation steps.

Pro Tip: If you use active ingredients (retinol, vitamin C), reduce physical exfoliation. Your skin is already turning over faster. Adding aggressive exfoliation on top can cause irritation and barrier damage.
