Can I use makeup with SPF instead of sunscreen?

Updated 1. January 2024

Immediate Answer: No. Makeup with SPF provides some protection, but coverage can be uneven as you often can't apply makeup thickly enough to achieve the stated SPF.

The Science: Makeup SPF assumes the same application density as sunscreen, which is impossible with makeup—you need smooth, even coverage for SPF efficacy, but textured makeup application for aesthetic results.

Additionally, makeup SPF requires reapplication every 2 hours in sun (same as sunscreen), but reapplying makeup during the day can be impractical.

Spotting Allergic Reactions: Use Daycream Defence Repair SPF 50 as your SPF base. If you wear makeup, apply makeup on top of your SPF—you're now getting full SPF protection + makeup coverage.

If you need to touch up during the day:

  • Reapply SPF if possible, then touch up makeup
  • Or use SPF-containing powder or spray as a touchup (better than nothing, but not equivalent to liquid SPF)

Pro Tip: SPF in makeup is a bonus benefit, not a replacement for dedicated sunscreen. Always use dedicated SPF under makeup for reliable protection.
