Can I use rich moisturisers if I have oily skin?

Updated 1. January 2024

Immediate Answer: Not daily. Rich moisturisers are excellent for hydration, but for oily skin, use them 2-3x weekly maximum, and only at night. During the day, stick with lightweight hydration with SPF.

The Science: Rich moisturisers contain heavy emollients (oils, butters) that provide occlusion and deep moisture. Oily skin doesn't need extra oils—it needs hydration and sebum balance. Using heavy day moisturisers on oily skin creates congestion and worsens breakouts.

Night is different: your skin repairs actively at night, and you're not worried about makeup application or daytime shine. A rich night moisturiser provides hydration and barrier support during your skin's peak repair time.

Pro Tip: If you use a rich moisturiser during the day on oily skin, you'll likely get congestion and breakouts. Wait for evening when your skin doesn't need to be shine-free.
