Does Gentle Cleansing Foam remove makeup and sunscreen effectively?

Updated 1. January 2024

Immediate Answer: Yes—it effectively removes daily SPF, light-to-medium makeup, and pollution residue. For heavy or waterproof makeup, we recommend double cleansing (two passes with the foam) or using a dedicated oil cleanser first, followed by Gentle Cleansing Foam.

The Science: The surfactant blend (disodium laureth sulfosuccinate + cocamidopropyl betaine) creates a foam that surrounds and lifts oil-based particles from the skin. It handles:

  • SPF removal: Modern chemical sunscreens (like those in Daycream Defence Repair SPF 50) are designed to bind to skin. A single thorough cleanse with Gentle Cleansing Foam removes this effectively—we specifically tested it against our own daycream.
  • Light-to-medium makeup: Foundation, BB cream, concealer, and powder are removed with one pass for light coverage, two passes for fuller coverage.
  • Waterproof makeup: Waterproof mascara, long-wear lipstick, and heavy foundation benefit from a thorough double cleanse—use the Face Repair Device during the second pass for a deeper clean.

Complete SPF removal is critical because leftover sunscreen residue can clog pores, cause breakouts, and—most importantly—create a film that blocks your evening treatment products from penetrating properly.

Double Cleanse Method:

  1. First pass on damp skin—dissolves SPF and makeup (30 seconds)
  2. Rinse thoroughly
  3. Second pass—cleanses the skin itself (30 seconds)
  4. Rinse and proceed with evening routine

Pro Tip: The easiest way to check if your cleanser is removing SPF properly: after cleansing, swipe a cotton pad with toner or micellar water across your face. If it picks up colour or residue, your SPF wasn't fully removed. Gentle Cleansing Foam should leave the cotton pad clean after a proper double cleanse.
